Crackdown against illegal arms, ganja smuggling in Koraput

Koraput: In a bid to tackle criminal activities, police have launched a major crackdown on illegal arms and ganja smuggling in Koraput district. The operation, initiated earlier this week, aims to seize unauthorised weapons and dismantle organised crime networks.
The operation follows a breakthrough in a major ganja smuggling case recently, where eight people were arrested after an exchange of fire under Jeypore Sadar police station limits. Two country-made pistols were recovered.
DIG (south-western range), Akhileshwar Singh, said, “We are committed to ensuring the safety of citizens. Seizing illegal arms is a crucial step towards reducing crime.”
Koraput, along with bordering Malkangiri, are known for ganja smuggling, with contraband sourced from Lamataput and Machkund areas. Police said many local unemployed youths are being drawn into smuggling as informers and scouts.
“We have adopted zero tolerance towards ganja smuggling as it is directly linked to increased crime in the region. Our drive against ganja will be intensified in the coming days,” added the DIG.
He said the drive will also be carried out in Malkangiri, Rayagada and Nabarangpur districts.
Police have urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity, emphasising that community support is vital in fighting organised crime.
