CPM demands withdrawal of ‘divisive and unjust’ Waqf Amendment Act – The Times of India

Madurai: In the wake of BJP govt at the Centre passing Waqf Bill in parliament, CPM polit bureau member B V Raghavulu on Saturday said CPM adopted a resolution against it. A public meeting to be held later in the evening was cancelled due to heavy rain in Madurai.
The 24th Congress of the CPM was held in Madurai, in which several resolutions were adopted. Raghavulu told reporters, “CPM has demanded immediate withdrawal of the divisive and unjust Waqf Amendment Act.”
He said several other resolutions were adopted as well. They include a demand for restoration of full statehood and rapid development of Jammu & Kashmir; expressing solidarity with Cuba and condemning the economic blockade imposed by the US; to withdraw the national policy framework on agricultural marketing; to recognize basic needs as fundamental rights; demanding extension of reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs to the private sector; resisting privatisation of public electricity sector; opposing deep-sea mining; addressing increasing violence against women and children; combating drug addiction among youth; ensuring equal rights and dignity for LGBTQ+; ensuring dignity and justice for the disabled; and opposing the UGC draft regulations.
Raghavulu said 53 delegates, including coordinator of CPM polit bureau Prakash Karat, participated in the discussions on the political resolutions.
Presenting the party statistics, Raghavulu said, “Party membership increased since the last party Congress from 9,85,757 in 2021 to 10,19,009 in 2024.
The percentage of women members in the party increased from 18.2% to 20.2% in 2024.”
