‘Court order may halt admissions in edu institutions’ | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: The Patna high court’s decision to set aside the amendments passed by the state legislature to increase the reservation for Backward Classes, Extremely Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from 50% to 65% in govt educational institutions and jobs has evoked mixed reactions.
Many have welcomed the high court judgment on the grounds that the Supreme Court has already made its stand clear on the maximum limit of reservations in govt jobs and educational institutions and any state must not surpass this. While others apprehended that the judgment would create a problem for those who have already availed it. A reversal at this stage may lead to other legal complications.
Working president of Federation of University Teachers’ Associations of Bihar, Kanhaiya Bahadur Sinha, said the process of admission in higher education institutions in the state in the current academic session (2024-25) is already in operation. “The HC judgment will halt the process midway, causing delay in the commencement of the new academic session.”
Social activist Nawal Kishore Chaudhary, however, said that extending the caste reservations in Bihar was just a political gimmick and the government knew that it won’t stand in the court of law. The HC judgment on reservations must be respected by all, Chaudhary said.
