Cops to enforce fireworks ban during Chandan Yatra | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Puri police on Monday announced their readiness to strictly enforce the govt’s prohibition on fireworks during the Chandan Yatra festival, which begins on Akshaya Tritiya on Wednesday. Police authorities will station five platoons at the Narendra tank for 21 days.
A devastating incident took place at Narendra tank during the Chandan Yatra celebrations in Puri on May 29, 2024, resulting in the death of seventeen individuals, including seven minors, due to multiple explosions from high-intensity crackers. “There is a complete ban on firecrackers during the festival. We have asked our personnel to remain extremely alert. Violators will face stringent action. We appeal to devotees to celebrate the festival without firecrackers,” Puri SP Vinit Agrawal said.
The SP conducted a security assessment at the Narendra tank alongside other officers. Beyond the five platoons, the deployment includes an additional SP, 5 DSPs, 8 inspectors, 20 sub-inspectors, 4 havildars, 37 constables and 58 home guards to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival. “For the first time, a feedback centre will be set up by the Puri police at the Narendra tank, where all complaints will be received. People can share their travel experiences,” Agrawal said.
The 42-day Chandan Yatra comprises two sections: Bahara (outer) Chandan and Bhitara (inner) Chandan, each lasting 21 days.
