Construction Waste: BMC to turn construction waste into bricks | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Taking a cue from the Chandigarh civic body, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to make bricks out of the construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the city.
The C&D waste is the bulk of waste which BMC enforcement squads seize from individuals and institutions as they violate handling norms. On an average, BMC seizes about 50 tonnes of C&D waste from different places of the city and dumps them at different spots. In the absence of a C&D plant, it is not able to process and then reuse them as bricks.
“We have seen how the Chandigarh civic body is converting C&D waste into bricks and paver blocks. An expression of interest has been invited for the purpose but a tender is yet to be floated. We will also look for a patch of land where the brick plant and C&D storage yard will be set up,” said Manaranjan Sahu, BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation).
According to BMC’s rules, waste generated through construction, repair, transportation, re-modelling and demolition of private and govt establishments, households, roads and drains, should be handled properly. If found dumped on roadsides, it will be seized. A special drive against C&D waste has been going on since July 1, 2023.
BMC officials said like Chandigarh, they would use the bulk of produced bricks for construction of boundary walls and putting paver blocks, among others. “The surplus bricks may be sold. But this is at a planning stage and we haven’t decided yet,” Sahu added.
The dumped C&D waste encroaches road space and lends an ugly look to the city. It also leads to accidents and clogs drains. “The special drive against C&D waste is still on and three squads are engaged for the work,” a BMC officer said.
A BMC squad has been authorised to impose a fine of Rs 5,000 (per trip) on owners of C&D waste. If the BMC removes the waste using its own tractor, it charges Rs 4,500 per trip. BMC so far has collected more than Rs 1 crore as fine for flouting C&D waste handling rules.
