Congress Improvement: Congress’s Improvement in Polls Sparks Hope for Party’s Revival in State | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The Congress’s modest improvement in the assembly election has caught pollsters off guard. In 2019, the party secured only nine seats with a 17% vote share. This time it increased its tally to 14 seats, though with a slightly lower vote share of 13.26%.
While the progress may not appear substantial at first glance, it marks a significant shift in the political landscape in the state in the backdrop of the INDIA bloc’s impressive show in the Lok Sabha elections in the country.
“The results of the overall performance of the Congress and INDIA bloc were also reflected in our show in Odisha. We have made a significant growth in winning the number of assembly seats. While BJD failed to win a single Lok Sabha seat, we succeeded in retaining our Koraput parliamentary seat,” senior Congress leader Prasad Harichandan, who was appointed as the chairman of the party’s election management committee in the state.
Results showed that the Congress wrested four assembly segments – Gunupur, Bissam Cuttack, Lakshmipur and Pottangi from the BJD, besides retaining Jeypore and winning Rayagada (all six assembly segments under Koraput Lok Sabha seat) this time. These constituencies used to be Congress bastions.
According to experts, the party has an opportunity to reorganize its base in the state after BJD’s downfall. “The Congress showed revival signs at the Centre. The leaders here should now relook their strategies to gain ground to replace the BJD as the main opposition. Since BJP is the main rival of the Congress at Centre, the fight between Congress and BJP govt in Odisha would be keenly watched in future,” said political analyst Debasis Das.
Das added that Congress could have further bettered its show this time had they picked the right candidates.
