Cong slams govt over excise duty hike on fuel

Mumbai: MPCC president Harshawardhan Sapkal on Monday criticised the NDA govt for the increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre, saying while crude oil is priced at $65 in the international market, the Indian public is being “looted through exorbitant taxes.”
“The NDA govt must come out with a white paper detailing the taxes and cess imposed on fuel. Shocking is the fact that celebrities, who tweeted every time when petrol prices rose by Rs 2 under the UPA regime, have maintained a discreet silence,” Sapkal said. Sapkal said that when crude oil prices are continuously dropping in the global market, Indian citizens are not reaping the benefits, and while crude oil currently stands at $65 per barrel internationally, petrol prices in India are in the region of Rs 109 and those of diesel are over Rs 93 per litre. – Prafulla Marpakwar
