Commuting turns into nightmare as infra work damages internal roads | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: Residents of several localities in the city are grappling with damaged internal roads, causing significant inconvenience to their daily commute.
Multiple areas, including Old Town, Laxmi Sagar, Bomikhal, Saheed Nagar, Patia, Sailashree Vihar and Niladri Vihar, have roads filled with numerous potholes and craters making travel hazardous. The situation has been exacerbated by ongoing infrastructure projects such as drain construction, underground cable laying and cooking gas pipeline installation. Residents complained that the repair work is inadequate.
“Authorities recently initiated drain construction on Vivekananda Marg, digging up half the road on both sides. Construction debris left on the remaining road surface makes it extremely difficult to navigate the stretch,” said Sarthak Mohanty, an Old Town resident.
Recent rainfall has further deteriorated road condition, particularly routes like Rath Road and Gopabandhu Marg, among others, raising serious concerns among locals. “The condition of the roads is creating a major safety threat,” Mohanty said.
The problem is particularly acute in institutional areas such as Sishu Vihar, Sailashree Vihar and Niladri Vihar, where internal roads connecting various establishments have uneven surfaces due to poor maintenance following infrastructure work. Vikram Jena, a Niladri Vihar resident, questioned the authorisation process. “Agencies quickly dig up roads for cable laying but fail to properly restore them afterwards. This has been causing severe inconvenience to a lot of people,” he said.
Residents expressed frustration over the apparent lack of coordination between various agencies and the inadequate repair work. The situation has created significant challenges for residents, particularly during peak hours and adverse weather conditions.
Responding to the concerns, city mayor Sulochana Das assured that the administration is actively monitoring the situation. “We have directed ground-level officials to inspect road conditions where construction work is going on,” she stated.
The mayor announced plans to strengthen enforcement measures and warned of penalties for agencies failing to meet repair standards. “We have also initiated the tender process for comprehensive road repair across affected localities,” Das said.
However, locals demanded immediate action to address the pressing infrastructure issue that continues to affect their daily lives. “There is a need for better coordination between various agencies,” Sonali Hota, a Patia resident, said.
