CMC to convert plastic waste into fuel for cement plants | Bhubaneswar News

Cuttack: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has launched an innovative waste management initiative to convert plastic waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for use in cement manufacturing.
The project will primarily source plastic waste from the Chakradharpur dumping site, where around 3 metric tonnes of plastic waste has been identified for initial processing. “Processing plastic waste into RDF will not only help reduce environmental pollution but also contribute towards the production of alternative energy,” said CMC deputy commissioner, Swetapadma Satpathy.
CMC has partnered with a leading cement manufacturer to ensure efficient utilisation of the processed RDF. Machines, costing Rs 1.5 crore monthly for operation and management, will be employed for waste segregation, shredding and conversion into RDF, officials said.
Sources said the RDF generated will be transported directly to cement plants, preventing plastic waste from ending up in landfills. “We are committed to ensuring that the generated RDF is efficiently transported and utilised by cement plants to achieve a cleaner and greener city,” Satpathy said.
CMC plans to intensify its plastic waste collection and processing efforts in the coming months to maximise RDF output.
