CMC partners with Oil India for 200MT biogas plant | Bhubaneswar News

Cuttack: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Oil India Limited (OIL) on Friday to establish a 200 metric tonne compressed biogas (CBG) plant, marking a significant advancement in the city’s waste management infrastructure.
The agreement, signed in the presence of housing and urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, will see the facility constructed in Jagatpur area here. OIL will invest Rs 150 crore in the project, which is expected to be completed within 22 months.
“About 200 tonnes of waste will be processed daily to produce biogas and organic manure,” the minister said. “The state govt has planned to set up similar projects in other cities.”
Under the partnership, CMC will provide segregated solid waste, while OIL will handle the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the plant. The project will be developed on 11 acres of land in ward 59 near Jagatpur.
Ranjan Goswami, executive director of OIL, said the plant aims to generate 10 to 15 tonnes of biogas per day. “The plant will not only contribute to waste management but also play a significant role in the production of clean energy,” he added.
The project is expected to create employment opportunities, with around 75 workers being engaged for plant operations and maintenance.
CMC deputy commissioner (head of sanitation), Swetapadma Satpathy, described the initiative as a “game-changer” for Cuttack’s sustainable waste management efforts. “With Oil India’s expertise, we will not only streamline the waste disposal process but also contribute to the city’s green energy goals,” she said.
The biogas produced will have multiple industrial and commercial applications, while the organic manure generated as a by-product will benefit agricultural activities.
