CMC launches eviction drive to decongest Ring Road | Bhubaneswar News

Cuttack: The Cuttack municipal corporation (CMC) on Monday launched a massive eviction drive at Ring Road to address congestion and ensure a smoother traffic flow. The drive focused on a 2km stretch between Khannagar and Madhupatna.
More than 30 unauthorized structures were demolished during the first day of the drive, which is expected to continue in phases. According to CMC officials, the eviction is part of a larger plan to reclaim public land and improve urban infrastructure along Ring Road.
CMC’s deputy commissioner Swetapadma Satpathy said, “The eviction drive is essential to ensure safety, to decongest the road and for providing a smooth commute. We conducted prior surveys and informed the encroachers in advance to avoid inconvenience. Public welfare is our top priority.”
Satpathy added, “The eviction drive will continue in the coming days too, as dedicated teams have been engaged to carry out the work.”
Suresh Guru, a resident of Khannagar, said, “This step was long overdue. The Ring Road became highly congested, posing a risk to both commuters and pedestrians. Clearing encroachments will make it safer and more organized for everyone.”
“As the road leads to Cuttack Netaji Bus Terminal and Orissa high court, it must remain clear all the time,” Guru added.
Ajay Behera, a shopkeeper in the area, said, “While we understand the need for decongestion, the authorities should provide a proper space for small vendors. We hope the civic body takes this into account.”
“The authorities must act when illegal encroachments are erected on any particular road of the city, which will debar them from such massive eviction and illegal acquisition of govt land,” Sujit Dash, a resident of Madhupatna area, said.
The corporation plans to develop the reclaimed land for public use, including widening roads, creating green spaces and setting up parking facilities. Officials emphasized that strict action would be taken against any future encroachments. The ongoing eviction drive is part of a broader initiative to transform Cuttack into a cleaner and more organized city.
Further phases of the operation will focus on other congested areas of the city, with the CMC urging public cooperation in its efforts to improve urban infrastructure.
