CM unveils plan for Greater Bhubaneswar Region | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: In view of the rapid urbanisation and given the need for a more liveable experience, the govt is planning to create a Greater Bhubaneswar Region, a massive economic region encompassing major cities including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, and Paradip.
During a high-level review meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan on Friday, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi outlined the vision for an inclusive and sustainable economic zone spanning 8,500 square km, a size greater than Bengaluru (8,053 square km) and Chennai (8,201 square km) metropolitan areas. The project aims to boost Odisha’s urban development goals leading up to 2036, the state’s centenary year.
“The plan is necessary from both urbanisation and economic perspectives for building a developed Odisha by 2036,” Majhi said, adding, “We need to think ahead for the next 50 years.”
The CM directed officials to explore the possibility of including additional areas in the project. He also emphasised on the need to study successful urban development models from other states before the plan’s implementation.
The meeting addressed key infrastructure initiatives, including plans for a new satellite city near Bhubaneswar and the introduction of metro rail services to accommodate the capital’s growing population.
The Greater Bhubaneswar project represents one of the largest urban development initiatives in the state’s history, aimed at transforming the region into a major economic hub. Housing and urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, chief secretary Manoj Ahuja, and several senior officials attended the meeting.
Currently, the jurisdiction of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) spreads across 419 square km, which includes the urban areas of Bhubaneswar as well as the surrounding suburban (Khurda and Jatni) and rural areas.
The idea of a Greater Capital Region of over 1,100 square km was first mooted in 2016 when the BDA notified a ring road alignment in the Bhubaneswar Development Plan area. The plan was to include Cuttack. The new plan, however, spreads to Paradip and Puri.
Sources said a proposed airport in Puri, likely to be the main international airport in the Greater Bhubaneswar Region, the Paradip port, and Paradip chemical and petrochemical region would be the major economic hubs of the proposed Greater Bhubaneswar.
The total population in the newly proposed Greater Bhubaneswar would be around 40 lakh and may cross 50 lakh in 10 years.
