CM launches incentive for tribal students

Bhubaneswar: Madho Singh Hath Kharcha Yojana, aimed at supporting tribal students, was launched by chief minister Mohan Majhi on Sunday during inauguration of the annual Adivasi Mela in the city.
Under the scheme, tribal students of classes IX and XI will receive a one-time incentive of Rs 5,000. The scheme is designed to help students meet their educational expenses and encourage higher participation in academics. It is expected to benefit about 3 lakh tribal students this year and the govt has allocated Rs 156 crore in the budget.
Majhi gave away cheques to a few eligible students on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Majhi said, “After BJP formed the govt, it planned to empower the tribals and include them in the mainstream. The scheme aims at reducing dropout rates at schools.”
On the other hand, Exhibition Ground in the heart of the city has turned into a tribal village for the Adivasi Mela, where tribal communities from across the state have constructed replicas of their houses, giving a glimpse of their indigenous lifestyle and cultural practices.
There are 20 cottages and 147 stalls to sell tribal products, including spices, pulses, rice, millets and other forest produce. Live demonstration of traditional crafts and handloom of tribal communities are being held in 15 stalls. Besides, there is an array of authentic tribal delicacies at the food court.
Handicraft items, including wood carving by Kondhs, dhokra metal works by Dongrias, cane and bamboo basketry works by Juang and Bhuyans, tribal paintings by Sauras, wall paintings by Kisans, and jewellery made of brass and bell metals, are being sold at 40 stalls.
