Motihari: On the second day of his Pragati Yatra on Tuesday, chief minister (CM) Nitish Kumar inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 48 projects worth Rs 201 crore in East Champaran district. He also reviewed the progress of ongoing development projects in the district. The review meeting, held on the Motihari Collectorate premises, was attended by senior officials and public representatives.
“A lot of development work has been done here and whatever more is needed will also be undertaken by the govt,” Kumar said at the meeting.
Among the new announcements, the CM revealed plans to construct a road along the right embankment of the Bagmati river to connect Dhaka and Patahi blocks with Sitamarhi, thereby improving regional connectivity. He also announced the renovation and beautification of the historical Ghordaur Pond to attract tourists. The CM said an embankment would be constructed along the Bangari river to protect Raxaul town from floods. He also pledged to develop the Barharwa-Lakhansen High School, which Mahatma Gandhi had initiated during the Champaran Satyagraha movement in 1917.
The CM’s day began with a visit to Sundarapur panchayat in Kesariya block, 60km south of Motihari. A large crowd of villagers, including many women, warmly welcomed him. During the visit, he inaugurated the newly upgraded high school building, a school playground and a pond.
Kumar interacted with members of Jeevika, a women’s self-help group. He inquired about their challenges and assured them of continued financial support. Expressing their gratitude, the women told the CM, “We have become financially independent and are now able to stand on our own feet. The help extended by you has brought economic progress to our families.”
Acknowledging their response, Kumar said, “I have come here to personally witness the development work in this remote village. Officials must ensure that there are no public grievances regarding the implementation of these projects.”
The CM then travelled to Sugao panchayat in Sugauli block, 27km north of Motihari, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several projects. These included a panchayat bhawan, school buildings, training centres, an industrial training institute and a bridge. Once again, villagers turned out in large numbers to welcome him.
Addressing another group of Jeevika members, Kumar reiterated the govt’s commitment to empowering women. “We are dedicated to women’s development, helping them become self-reliant through Jeevika. If you need more support, let us know. While we work for men too, our focus is greater on women because they face higher levels of unemployment,” he said.
Later in the day, Kumar inaugurated a new ₹30-crore road-over-bridge (ROB) near Motihari Court, constructed by the Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited. The CM also visited the proposed site of a bridge over the Dhanauti river near Majuraha village, aimed at connecting Areraj Road to the western part of Motihari town. Approving the project, he asked engineers of the road construction department to expedite work on the bridge.
Kumar once again announced that the price of sugar cane would be increased by Rs 20 per quintal. He also revealed plans for a Rs 13-crore road bridge over the Dhanauti river to connect Kotawa Road with Areraj Road on the western side of Motihari town. A wide road will be built to link the Mahadeo Someshwarnath Temple to the Areraj main road, he said.
