Classrooms: Students study under a tree due to dilapidated classrooms in Rourkela, Sundargarh district | Bhubaneswar News
Rourkela: Students of 71-year-old govt-run primary school in Kutra block of Sundargarh district have been studying under the shade of a tree and also on verandah of the school for the past year as the classrooms are in a dilapidated condition. The students are even taking their midday meals under the tree and on the verandah.
Sources said Government Primary School, at Jharen village under Nuagaon panchayat in Kutra block of Sundargarh district, was established in 1953.Altogether 59 students study in classes I to V. However, the condition of two asbestos-roofed classrooms is so deplorable that students of two classes are forced to study together in one of the two concrete-roofed rooms.
In August last year, the president and members of school managing committee and teachers of the school had written to then block development officer to repair or reconstruct the school building. But no steps have been taken ever after 10 months. The voters of this village had even threatened that they would boycott the Lok Sabha election election if new school building was not repaired. Though there were promises galore, there has been no headway.
Subardan Minz, president, school managing committee, is disappointed at the lack of follow-up action though 10 months have elapsed since they wrote to the BDO and the then block education officer. “We are very disappointed.”
Kutra BEO in-charge Ashok Lakra also admitted that the condition of classrooms of the school at Jharen is in dilapidated condition and a new building should be constructed soon. “Yes, the classrooms are in a very bad shape.” Kutra BDO Jugal Kishore Biswal said he is aware of the situation. “Jharen school requires a new building for which I have written to Sundargarh collector and district education officer,” he said.
