Class II boy dies as rusted goalpost falls on him in Chennai | – The Times of India
CHENNAI: A rusted goalpost fell on a Class II student, Advik, and killed him on Friday at a football ground in Avadi.
Police, quoting eyewitnesses, said the incident took place at 5.30pm on Friday while Advik was playing a friendly match of football with his schoolmates. The municipal playground, located near the air force quarters in Avadi, is a regular spot for children to play.
The metal goalpost , about eight feet tall, had been rusting and deteriorating for several months.It had visible signs of wear and decay at its base. Locals had previously raised concerns about the safety of the playground equipment.
After it crashed on Advik, hitting his head, other players and people nearby took him to a hospital within 30 minutes. He died of injuries there.
Advik’s father, Rajesh, works at a private firm in Chennai. The family had moved to Mutha Pudupet a few years ago. Teachers at the Air Force school described Advik as a bright student who excelled in both academics and sports.
The Avadi police have initiated an investigation to determine the authorities responsible for playground maintenance. Senior police officials visited the site and ordered immediate removal of all unsafe play equipment.
The local residents’ welfare association has submitted a request to the authorities demanding regular safety audits of all playgrounds in the area. They have also called for the installation of new, safety-certified equipment at all public play areas.
Police have sealed the playground pending completion of investigation. They are gathering statements from witnesses and examining maintenance records of the facility.
