City UPHCs to observe ‘geriatric day’ on 1st Saturday every mth | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The first Saturday of every month will be observed as ‘Geriatric Day‘ at all urban public health centres (UPHCs) to provide care and support to elderly people, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said on Wednesday. The initiative aims to address the needs of elderly people while promoting healthy and improved quality of life, they said.
“Geriatric care involves a wide range of services under one roof, making healthcare more accessible and convenient for senior citizens. Our goal is to create a one-stop destination where elderly citizens can access various healthcare services,” a BMC official said. The service includes health screenings, diagnostic services, and specialised treatments tailored to age-related conditions.
Healthcare consultants will encourage the elderly to adopt a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, balanced diet and preventive care. The platform will be used to raise awareness about age-related issues, focusing on challenges faced by the elderly such as social isolation and diseases like dementia, osteoporosis and diabetes,” a BMC officer said.
‘Geriatric Day’ will be observed in all 22 UPHCs, with doctors and nutritionists allocated to each centre to provide consultations. The city has around 2 lakh senior citizens. Officials said the initiative is unque in its holistic approach. “We are not just focusing on medical treatment but stressing incorporating yoga and physiotherapy services, mental health support, and social engagement activities,” an official said.
A special kiosk will be set up to provide information about various elderly welfare schemes and govt benefits available to them. According to BMC, to ensure maximum benefit, each UPHC will be equipped with assistive device demonstrations, and eligible elderly people can receive necessary devices through the programme. The initiative also includes a robust referral system for cases requiring advanced medical attention.
The success of the initiative will be monitored through regular feedback and assessment of health outcomes.
