Bhubaneswar: The city police on Thursday detained four men—two from Delhi, one from Hyderabad, and another from Gujarat—in connection with a online gaming scam.
“The suspects impersonated a Chinese gaming website to defraud individuals. They lured victims into joining social media groups, promising high returns on gaming investments. Participants were asked to deposit money via UPI payments using QR codes, but once the funds were transferred, the victims’ accounts were blocked, denying them access to their invested money,” a senior police officer said.
Police seized 20 smartphones, two computers, one laptop, CCTV cameras, multiple debit cards, Wi-Fi equipment, three passports, and some foreign currencies.
Last week, a 22-year-old man allegedly hanged himself in his house in the Old Town area here after losing money in online games.
