City drenched after overnight downpour

Patna: Heavy rainfall on Saturday night caused waterlogging in the city with knee-deep water accumulating in low-lying areas on Sunday. Several areas, including Hanuman Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Postal Park and RMS Colony in Kankarbagh, Nehru Nagar, Patliputra, some parts of Ashiana Nagar and Rukanpura experienced flooding with water rising up to three feet. Even the teams of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) faced difficulties to pump out rainwater as almost all the drains were flooded.
Urban development and housing minister Nitin Nabin called an emergency meeting regarding waterlogging in the city after the rain. He asked the officials concerned to work in alert mode and use super sucker machines to remove the water. All municipal corporation officials’ leaves were cancelled until September. Also, BUIDCO and the municipal corporation were directed to work with full responsibility. “There is no room for negligence and all officials should perform their duties with integrity,” Nabin said.
The city residents and the commuters experienced great inconvenience to reach their destinations as their vehicles are breaking down due to water entering the silencers. The same situation was witnessed in Vijay Nagar, Veer Basawan Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Rukanpura and some parts of Ashiana Nagar.
Khalid, a resident of Patliputra, said many manholes are open in the area, which can be extremely dangerous for passersby. The ongoing drainage and construction work in various parts of the city further compounded the difficulties faced by commuters.
Sanjay Kumar, a commuter, said the ongoing work in many areas has narrowed the lanes, exacerbating the traffic situation.
The PMC has deployed 75 teams to ensure water drainage in all wards. “The rising water level of the Ganga has added to the difficulties, but the PMC workers are addressing these challenges to provide convenience to the public,” a PMC release said.
