Citizen reporters force BMC to take action against stray cattle, dogs | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured action against the stray cattle and dog menace after some citizen reporters flagged the issue recently.
Several citizen reporters complained that bullfights, which have become a common occurrence in the city, are putting the lives of public in danger. They also escalated the issue of stray dogs on TOI’s Citizen Reporter app and requested the civic body for action.
Citizen reporter Bikash Mohanty wrote that while going to a departmental store in GGP colony, Bhubaneswar, he noticed a gathering of people. “I came to know from the people that two bulls were fighting on the road and one bull fell into the nullah, which was open for removing earth,” he wrote.
He further mentioned that the next day, while he was returning home, he observed some stray dogs fighting on the road, and one dog suddenly came in front of a two-wheeler. “The dog went away, but the rider fell on the road. There was an injury to his palm and chin. He was unable to drive the motorcycle,” he said.
Mohanty requested the BMC to take urgent steps to remove stray cows, bulls and dogs moving freely on the roads because sometimes road accidents may occur due to their movement.
Another citizen reporter, Shanti Lata, wrote that stray animals, especially cattle, are making life difficult for the people. She blamed the BMC for its indifferent attitude in removing the animals from the roads.
“The BMC has literally failed in controlling the stray animal menace in Bhubaneswar, and the citizens are suffering a lot. For a smart city like Bhubaneswar, such scenes are a dent to the city’s image not only before its residents but also before the visitors,” she wrote.
Taking note of the complaints, city mayor Sulochana Das said that cattle roaming on the streets are being taken to the kine house in Jamukoli, and the drive will be intensified further.
“We have been repeatedly warning cattle owners not to let their animals loose. We will intensify our drive further and penalise such cattle owners. Sterilisation of dogs will also resume soon,” she assured.
