CIL, AM Green ink 4500MW RE supply deal for ammonia production

Hyderabad: In what is touted as one of the world’s largest renewable energy contracts, Coal India Limited (CIL) inked a deal to supply 4500 MW of carbon-free energy to the upcoming green ammonia facilities of Hyderabad-based Greenko Group’s AM Green. The green power will be supplied through a combination of solar and wind capacities that CIL plans to set up on a pan-India basis, including 2500 MW to 3000 MW of solar and 1500 MW to 2000 MW of wind at an estimated total outlay of around Rs 25,000 crore.While CIL will explore potential sites for the wind projects in the southern states, it will look at sunny states like Gujarat and Rajasthan for the solar plants. AM Green said it will integrate the two renewable sources supplied by CIL with pumped hydro storage to ensure a steady supply of green energy to AM Green facilities.CIL and AM Green said they have already inked a formal non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the long-term supply and sourcing of renewable energy, which aligns with India’s goal of achieving a cleaner energy mix and transitioning towards net-zero emissions.”While coal remains our mainstay in meeting India’s expanding energy needs in the near term, our plans include a proactive role in building a greener and more sustainable future, which is in consonance with our commitment to become the country’s integrated energy provider,” CIL Chairman P M Prasad said.Greenko Group & AM Green founder Anil Chalamalasetty said with one of the world’s largest carbon-free, renewable energy supply contracts, AM Green aims to become one of the most cost-competitive producers of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green molecules in the world. AM Green, promoted by the founders of Greenko, is targeting production of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030, which equals around 1 MTPA of green hydrogen and represents a fifth of India’s target for green hydrogen production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
