Mumbai: A 24-year-old man was arrested by the railway police for the abduction of a five-year-old boy from under a railway bridge at Goregaon where the child stayed with his parents. Police said the accused, Karan Kanaujia, is childless and was to take the boy to Lucknow. Police are probing if he had any other motive for the abduction. The child has been reunited with his parents.
Police said Kanaujia worked as a labourer. Earlier this month, he started staying close to the place where the boy lives with his parents under Goregaon railway bridge. He befriended the child’s father, also a labourer, and often played with the child.
On Feb 11, the child vanished. The next morning, she approached the railway police station at Borivali. She told the police that Kanaujia was playing with her son the last she saw him. She had a photo of Kanaujia but not his phone number. An FIR was registered on Feb 12. Police later discovered that Kanaujia had taken the child along by train.
The police, under supervision of DCP Manoj Patil, ACP Kishore Shinde and senior inspector Datta Khuperkar, tracked down Kanaujia’s employer by showing his photo to construction workers at various sites. After a discussion with the police, Kanaujia’s employer called him to Kalyan to hand him over his dues. When he reached there with the child, a waiting police team took him into custody.
