Chief Minister Mohan Majhi Unveils Educational Initiatives for Children on Children’s Day |

Bhubaneswar: On Children’s Day, chief minister Mohan Majhi announced new schemes and initiatives for children and assured quality education in the state.
From launching the Godabarisha Mishra Model Primary School (GMMPS) scheme to setting up model primary schools in each panchayat, the CM announced a slew of measures aimed at improving learning and overall development of children. Majhi also announced the Aitihya School project to preserve centenary heritage schools and raised the cost of midday meal by a rupee.
The state govt will also bear hostel expenses of students in Odisha Adarsh Vidyalayas, Majhi said during the state-level children’s festival, Suravi, here on Thursday.
“One primary school in every panchayat will be developed as a model school under GMMPS at an expense of Rs 3 crore for each school. Emphasis will be given to developing a strong foundation, quality education, and overall development of children,” said Majhi.
He criticised the former BJD govt for having a faulty approach towards education by launching the ill-conceived 5T scheme that made cosmetic changes in high schools without laying a strong foundation.
As many as 6,794 primary schools will have facilities like smart classrooms, separate toilets for boys and girls, boundary walls, greenery, digital libraries, language labs, playgrounds, dining halls and computers.
The chief minister said that when he was in the opposition, he proposed qualitative improvement in primary education to the state govt, but no action was taken.
“The govt has identified 51 heritage schools that are over 100 years old or the oldest in each district, to be developed,” the CM said.
Waiving hostel fees for Odisha Adarsh Vidyalaya students, Majhi said, “Odisha govt has decided to bear the cost of Rs 2,000 for each student as cost of food in 455 hostels in 314 blocks.”
Out of the 314 Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas, 173 received central govt approval for girls hostels under the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Scheme, where food and lodging will be provided free of cost. For the remaining 141 girls hostels and 314 boys hostels, the govt will allocate an annual fund of Rs 187.15 crore to make all hostels fully functional, Majhi said.
In view of the rising cost of essential commodities, the CM also announced an increase of one rupee per meal under the midday meal scheme. In over 50,000 primary and upper primary schools, around 43 lakh students are provided food under the midday meal scheme. Currently, the state govt bears the cost of Rs 5.90 per primary and Rs 8.82 per upper primary student under the MDM scheme.
