Chennai Trio Arrested for Cheating Woman of Rs 26.5 Lakh in Cash and Gold | Chennai News – The Times of India

CHENNAI: Three people, including two women, were arrested by the Anna Nagar police on Friday for cheating a woman out of Rs 26.5 lakh in cash and gold jewellery in various instalments and refusing to return the valuables in Anna Nagar.
The arrested trio – S Sumathi (43) of Thiruverkadu, M Rajadurai (54) of Mayiladuthurai, and A Malar (41) of Tondiarpet – befriended the victim, Yamini (40) of Anna Nagar, in 2013. They deceived her by borrowing money under false pretenses, citing fabricated scenarios and stories.
Police said Yamini gave them Rs 26.5 lakh in cash and 17 sovereigns of gold jewellery between 2013 and 2020. After the COVID-19 pandemic, Yamini asked the trio to return the cash and gold. However, they evaded her and dodged her requests whenever she brought up the topic.
When the Anna Nagar police initially refused to register a case, Yamini approached the court and filed a complaint seeking legal intervention.
Following the court’s direction, the police registered a case against the trio.
Further investigations revealed that the accused had intentionally defrauded Yamini by collecting cash and gold with no intention of returning them.
The police team arrested Sumathi, Rajadurai, and Malar, who were later produced before a magistrate court in the city and remanded in judicial custody.
