Chennai suburban train cancellations likely to affect traffic ahead of school reopening

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will cancel more than a dozen suburban trains and partially curtail two others on May 31, June 1 and June 2 due to scheduled engineering and signal block works across multiple sections. The disruptions in Chennai Beach Chengalpet and Chennai Central–Gummidipundi corridors will affect passengers returning to the city after holidays, especially ahead of school reopening on June 2.On June 1, at least nine local trains running from Chennai Beach to Chengalpet — between 11 am and 1.45 pm — will be short-terminated. Six return services from Chengalpet to Chennai Beach — between 12 pm and 3.05 pm — will also be partially cancelled due to a line block at Kattangulathur yard. Simultaneously, another set of services between Tambaram and Guduvancheri will be hit.Adding to this, full-day cancellations have been announced for 17 EMU and MEMU services on May 31 and June 2 in the Chennai Central–Sullurupeta–Nellore sector. These include morning and mid-day services from Moore Market Complex to Gummidipundi and Sullurupeta, as well as key return trains operating in the late afternoon and evening. Services between Chennai Beach, Avadi, and Gummidipundi will also be impacted. To partially offset the disruption, Southern Railway will run six passenger special trains from Moore Market Complex, Chennai Beach, Ponneri, and Minjur during the affected time slots on May 31 and June 2.
