CHENNAI: A history-sheeter, rowdy Maharaja alias ‘High Court’ Maharaja, from Thoothukudi, was shot in his knee when he attempted to evade arrest after attacking the cops near Guindy in the early hours of Friday.
He suffered an injury below his knee. Police seized a country-made gun from him.
Police said Maharaja and his gang members attempted to kidnap a gold jewellery showroom owner’s son in Adambakkam. Based on a specific tip, a special team apprehended three suspects who were holed up at a lodge in Velachery.
During interrogation, the arrested trio, A Vinod, 27, of Thalamuthu Nagar in Tuticorin, A Balamurugan, 23, of Manali, and L Suresh, 35, of Madhavaram, revealed Maharaja’s role in it. Maharaja was involved in several cases in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts.
The teams fanned out in search of Maharaja. Chennai police established a dedicated team to nab Thoothukudi Maharaja after receiving intelligence about his hideout in Tirunelveli. The special unit apprehended him near Tirunelveli.
After he was brought to Chennai, during questioning, he disclosed information about a two-wheeler vehicle. When police took him to the Guindy Race Course area to recover it, Maharaja brandished a concealed country-made firearm, assaulted the officers, and attempted to flee.
The officers responded with gunfire, successfully subduing Maharaja. He sustained an injury to his leg and collapsed. Police rushed him to Royapettah Govt Hospital for medical treatment.
