Chennai: More than 1 lakh TNUHDB tenements across 209 schemes in 15 zones are set to get a major facelift, with Greater Chennai Corporation taking over their upkeep and maintenance. Tenement complexes in Perumbakkam and Manali will also be covered under this initiative.
This move follows directions from deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, instructing TNUHDB to transfer maintenance responsibilities to respective govt agencies. The goal is to address long-standing issues such as inadequate infrastructure, law and order concerns, and poor amenities across the city’s 212 tenement complexes.
“Due to manpower crunch the TNUHDB has been finding it hard to maintain the premises. During deputy CM’s review this was highlighted and he asked the GCC to handle the conservancy work,” said deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar. Under the new directive, GCC will manage internal roads, streetlights, waste management, tree plantations, and parks. As a first step, tenders have been invited for deploying personnel to ensure cleanliness and proper waste management in multiple housing units.
“Personnel will work daily from 8am to 5pm, cleaning all common areas. They will also collect household waste,” a GCC official said. A supervisor will be assigned for every five housing units, responsible for inspecting the premises daily. “Additionally, 1,100-litre compactor bins for wet and dry waste will be installed at the entrance of each housing unit, from where existing waste collection concessionaires will handle disposal. Waste must not be stacked or dumped within the premises,” the official added.
Perumbakkam falls under Chengalpet district administration, where no initiative was taken to maintain cleanliness. “If it comes under GCC, it will be a welcome change. Once the area is cleaned regularly, people will become more aware and stop dumping waste,” said Dhanalakshmi, a resident of Perumbakkam.
