Sambar, barking deer to be released in Chandaka on I-Day

Bhubaneswar: A sambar and a barking deer will get to roam free in the wild when they will be released in the Chandaka wildlife sanctuary here on Independence Day.
As a part of prey augmentation, Chandaka authorities brought 12 sambars from Taptapani zoo and 11 barking deer from Nandankanan. “We chose Independence Day for their release as it is symbolic. The animals have been kept in enclosures for a quarantine period but their home is the dorest,” said Sarat Behera, divisional forest officer, Chandaka.
The animals were brought to the enclosures one-and-half months ago. “To acquaint them with the habitat, enclosures were built in the sanctuary. They need to graze and feed like animals do in the wild. One month is enough for them to acclimatise,” the DFO said.
Chandaka, spread over 193 sq km, has tourist spots at Kuasara, Kochilaberena, Baunsberena, Pitagadia, Kumarakhunt, Pithakhia and 12 others. Once the released animals breed, their population will rise, increase their sighting.
During the nature trail, tourists come across some of these spots, where they witness the prey animals in wild. At night, tourists enjoy the serene forests and watch carnivores. The sanctuary authorities had released 300 deer brought from Cuttack zoo.
State wildlife officials have written to the Centre to provide around 10 gaurs to be reintroduced in the sanctuary.
