Bhubaneswar: In a major breakthrough, the commissionerate police have busted a notorious inter-state chain-snatching gang. The gang committed thefts on state and national highways, as well as on main roads of Bhubaneswar and its surrounding areas.
The police have arrested five persons in connection with the crimes, all aged between 19 and 27 years. According to the police, the gang, known as AA (Ayusman and Ayaaj), carried out the thefts using ‘super’ bikes.
The arrested individuals are Ayaaj Mohammad (20), Ayusman Tripathy (27), Debasis Barik (19), Sibaprasad Barik (23), and Rajat Kumar Nanda (25).The police recovered 40 gold chains, cash worth Rs 2 lakh, four super bikes, and five mobile phones from them.
The police said that the gang was active on the highways from Bhubaneswar to Bhadrak, Bhubaneswar to Angul, Bhubaneswar to Puri, and Bhubaneswar to Berhampur. The gang members were arrested in Jatani, where they were staying.
In a statement, the police mentioned that the gang used high-speed bikes and wore full gear, including helmets, to conceal their identities. They used fake and tampered number plates and operated in the evenings and late mornings.
After committing the crimes, they would sell the used bikes and acquire new ones. They targeted bike-riding commuters or pillion riders, the police said.
