Celebratory firing casualties halved in Bihar in 1 year | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: Bihar police have claimed that there has been around 50% reduction in the number of casualties in the incidents of celebratory firing in the state in the last one year, thanks to its strictness, active efforts and awareness campaigns.
Sanjay Singh, ADG, law and order, on Tuesday said that between June 2022 and May 2023, the number of deaths and injuries due to celebratory firing in Bihar was 58, while from June 2023 to May 2024, the number was 29.Thus, there has been approximately 50% reduction in the number of deaths and injuries, he said.

He added a total of 106 cases related to celebratory firing were registered between June 2022 and May 2023, while 70 cases were reported from June 2023 to May 2024. “This indicates a 34% decline in celebratory firing cases. A total of 132 individuals were arrested across the state in June 2022-May 2023 period. However, from June 2023 to May 2024, only 72 people were arrested, showing a reduction of approximately 45%,” Singh said.
In 2023, there were 17 districts where no cases related to celebratory firing were reported, and from January to May 2024, there were 25 districts with zero incidents.
In 2023, Gaya and Bhojpur districts had the highest number of cases, with 11 reported in each district. From January to May 2024, Gaya recorded one case, Bhojpur two cases, Patna highest five and Nalanda four cases.
This happened after the Arms (Amendment) Act, 2019, was introduced in the state in 2023 to control the increasing incidents of celebratory gunfire, aerial firing and weapon display, and the associated damages. “Under this act, individuals engaging in such acts can face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh, or both,” the ADG said.
The Bihar police headquarters had then directed all districts to take swift action in such cases. All districts were instructed to conduct annual verification of weapons, their licenses, the license holders and retainers in each police station area. Organizers of weddings, cultural events and similar programmes are required to inform the respective police stations in advance. Additionally, they have been asked to install CCTV cameras at the venues to clearly record all activities.
