Bhubaneswar: BJP’s Lok Sabha nominee for Bhubaneswar, Aparajita Sarangi, on Tuesday alleged the arrest of its Khurda MLA nominee Prasanta Kumar Jagadev, was made at the behest of a senior govt functionary.
Jagadev was arrested for allegedly vandalising an EVM in a booth in Khurda district and assaulting polling personnel. Aparajita claimed Jagadev is innocent and she has CCTV footage which she will present it at the appropriate time to prove his innocence.“Under what circumstances he was arrested is the big question. I had reached the affected booth 10 minutes after I heard about the incident. Nobody there confirmed that Jagadev broke the cabinet meant for polling in the booth. There were many people inside and outside the booth but none spoke about vandalism in the booth,” she said.
“A sitting MLA is being arrested without making the CCTV footage public. They are afraid of the popularity of Jagadev. I am armed with CCTV footage and I was surprised to watch it. You will come to know about another person who is involved in the vandalism. I have heard an audio in which a BJD man is saying Jagadev had no role in toppling the EVM,” she told a news conference here.
Senior BJD politician Sasmit Patra said BJP members are defending a man who had rammed his car into a crowd of BJP workers in an inebriated condition in 2022. “Because of his criminal activities, chief minister Naveen Patnaik had expelled him from BJD. But Odisha BJP leaders garlanded him. He is the same person against who all BJP leaders uttered the choicest of negative words,” he said.
Uttering the phrases Aparajita once used to criticise the action’s of Jagadev, Sasmit said, “Kou pariprekhire jane bidhayaka mahoday jan pratinidhi, loka mananka upare gadi chadhei dele? (Under what circumstances, a people’s representative and an MLA can run his vehicle over people?),” he said.
Chief electoral officer (CEO) Nikunja Bihari Dhal on Tuesday said in a release the district election officer (DEO) has been directed to initiate an inquiry and clarify regarding a purported video relating to the polling station under Begunia assembly constituency. “It has come to our notice that a video relating to a polling station in Begunia assembly constituency is circulating on some electronic and social media platforms,” the release said.
