Bhubaneswar: Students and parents gave mixed responses to the proposal of two CBSE Class XII board exams, likely to be implemented in 2026. Students said it will allow them to improve their marks, while parents feel it will increase the burden on their wards.
Sources said the National Curriculum Framework for School Education has proposed the change, and the education ministry has asked CBSE to prepare for two board exams.
“The current single board exam is like a make-or-break situation for students. High scorers usually do not face any problems, but those getting low marks are given a chance to appear for a supplementary exam for only one paper. The second board exam will give students a chance to appear in one or all subjects, providing an opportunity for improvement,” said Sanghamitra Rout, teacher at a city-based CBSE school.
Pradyumna Padhi, whose son is studying in Class X, said, “We are not sure if two board exams will reduce the burden on students or increase it. If a student has to repeat all the papers in both board exams, then it would be of little help. As most students are preparing for entrance examinations, the dual board exams may create more pressure.”
Students said it will provide a chance for improvement. “Having two chances will help us better understand where we stand and what areas we need to focus on more. It allows us to improve our marks if we do not perform well in the first attempt. It can lead to better preparation and ultimately better results,” said Daksh Mohapatra, a Class X student.
Another student, Sneha Swain, said, “Knowing that I have a second chance will reduce my stress levels during the first exam. It will allow me to perform more confidently.”
Parents also suggested a balanced approach while introducing reforms in the exam and evaluation system. “Govt must not experiment with the careers of students. Changes in the system have a wider impact on children,” said Ramesh Chandra Panda, a parent.
