Case against influencer for spreading rumours about victim in Badlapur sexual assault case – Times of India
Thane: The police registered a case against a social media influencer for spreading rumours about the school sexual abuse case in Badlapur. She was detained, questioned and issued a notice before being released.
Identified as Ritika Shelar, the influencer has more than five lakh followers on social media.
The police said Shelar had shared wrong information about one of the victims of the sexual abuse and her mother on social media, after which the rumour spread rapidly in the city.
Internet services, shut on Wednesday, were restored in Badlapur after 32 hours by the police, after which the rumour spread at night that the sexual abuse victim had died. Another rumour spread that a large number of people were standing outside the police station to protest.
The cyber team identified Shelar as the one who posted the wrong message and the police registered a case under the IT Act against Shelar.
