Capital city sizzles at 40.2C; heatwave warning for 6 dists | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar/Jharsuguda: Jharsuguda in western Odisha recorded the highest of 43 degrees Celsius on Friday, with the capital city also crossing the 40-degree mark (40.2C) for the first time this summer. Day temperature in 16 more places was hovering around 40-41C during the day, affecting lives.
IMD also issued a heatwave warning for six districts — Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir and Kalahandi — on Saturday and Sunday. The IMD bulletin said the day temperature would likely rise by 2-3C during the next 24 hours. “Similarly, night temperature would likely rise by 2-3C by Saturday,” the bulletin said.
Sanjeev Dwivedi, a scientist at the regional IMD centre here, said a change in wind pattern supported the rise in mercury level.
An inter-state meeting, jointly organised by the Jharsuguda district administration and Chhattisgarh govt, was held in Bandbahal on Friday to implement preventive measures including drinking water facilities, heatwave awareness campaigns, and shaded rest areas to ensure the safety of truck drivers transporting coal.
