Capital city celebrates 77th foundation day with fervour | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: Vibrant festivities, dazzling lights and cultural pride marked the 77th foundation day celebrations of Bhubaneswar on Sunday. Residents of all age groups took to social media to express their love for the city, which was formally inaugurated as Odisha’s capital on April 13, 1948.
Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, politicians and people from all walks of life, wished residents on the occasion.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhakta Charan Das posted a photo on social media of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laying the foundation stone of Bhubaneswar as state capital. Several people posted photos depicting the city’s growth and development over the years. “Clean and vibrant, Bhubaneswar shines where smart living meets colourful dreams and every street tells a story of progress,” wrote Subhranshu Satpathy, a resident, on X.
The celebrations, which will be held over two days, kicked off with a parade by students of various educational institutes in the city, with assembly speaker Surama Padhy hoisting the national flag. She called upon the residents to contribute to further enhancement of the capital.
Prominent landmarks across the city — from the state secretariat to Utkal Mandap, Rabindra Mandap, state museum, govt offices and business establishments — were lit up with decorative lights, while public spaces were adorned with appliqué work from Pipili. “Bhubaneswar is not just a city, it’s an emotion. We have seen it transform over the decades into a modern, smart city while keeping its ancient soul intact,” said 68-year-old resident Madhusmita Pattnaik, who has lived in Bhubaneswar since childhood.
Originally designed by German architect Otto Königsberger, Bhubaneswar was envisioned as a modern planned city and has now emerged as a key educational, cultural and IT hub in eastern India. Mayor Sulochana Das urged the residents to protect the city’s art, culture and heritage while making it clean, green and beautiful. “Bhubaneswar is a perfect blend of history and modernity. From ancient temples to IT parks, the city reflects the aspirations of a progressive Odisha,” she said.
A photo exhibition was organised on the occasion to showcase Bhubaneswar’s heritage, art, architecture, political background, social transformation, spiritual landscape, and its progressive development towards becoming a smart city. For youngsters, the occasion was an opportunity to reconnect with the city’s legacy. “We often take Bhubaneswar’s cleanliness, greenery and calm for granted. But today, I feel grateful to be growing up here,” said college student Aditya Pradhan.
