Cabinet approves road policy, highway authority bill | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: State cabinet has approved two major initiatives aimed at modernising road infrastructure — the ‘Odisha State Road Policy 2025‘ and ‘Odisha State Highway Authority Bill, 2025’. CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday announced that the new policy framework will ensure the development of a quality road network for safe, sustainable and efficient transportation across the state.
The Road Policy 2025 introduces several key features, including guidelines for inter-departmental road transfers and sustainable funding mechanisms for infrastructure management. It also focuses on enhancing road safety to reduce accidents and strengthening the capacity of road sector organisations in various aspects of development and maintenance.
A significant component of the policy is the development of a ‘Comprehensive Online Bridge Information System’ (BIS). The digital platform will maintain detailed information about all state bridges and facilitate annual assessments using modern technology. The assessment reports will be regularly updated in both the BIS and Odisha Road Asset Management System.
“Our goal is to develop 75,000 km of world-class road network to boost the state’s economic development,” said Majhi. The govt plans to implement various high-value projects to achieve the target.
The Highway Authority Bill will establish an autonomous body — Odisha State Highway Authority — to oversee the development of major road projects. The authority will play a crucial role in implementing and maintaining the state’s road network effectively.
