Berhampur: Berhampur University is among four universities in Odisha chosen for development as Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU) under the PM Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA). Alongside Ravenshaw University (Cuttack), Maharaja Sri Ramachandra Bhanja Deo University (Mayurbhanj), and Sambalpur University (Sambalpur), it will receive Rs 100 crore to elevate its infrastructure and academic capabilities to international standards.
The scheme, approved by PM-USHA’s Project Approval Board (PAB), allocates the funds for use over the next five years. Berhampur University was waiting for the project approval. “We are happy as the central govt approved the project for the overall development of the university,” said Geetanjali Dash, vice-chancellor. Detailed plans for funds utiliation will soon be outlined, focusing on construction and academics.
As Berhampur University gears up to celebrate its foundation day on Jan 2, MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy lauded the initiative, crediting Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. “We hope the university uses the funds to meet its goals for research, ranking and infrastructure and to make the institute competitive at the international level,” said the MP.
