Berhampur: Authorities of Berhampur University (BU) have sought over Rs 8.70 crore from the state govt for constructing a boundary wall adjoining the boys’ hostels after the institute handed over 25.672 acres of its land for expansion work of Rangeilunda airport.
“As the construction of the airport is currently underway, we noticed that a large number of trees have been cut down. The trees served as the natural boundary for the hostels, which are situated on the other side of the proposed airport,” a university official said.
BU vice-chancellor Geetanjali Dash said, “We have sent a proposal for construction of the wall. We hope that the govt will sanction the funds considering the safety and security of the boarders.”
Sachidanand Nayak, registrar of the university, said they have written to the special secretary of higher education department recently, requesting the sanction of special grants for the construction. He said a proposal of over Rs 8.70 crore was submitted to the govt. “Earlier, the university administration submitted different proposals based on rough estimation for the sanction of grants. Now we submitted the final estimation, as prepared by a construction agency, to the govt,” he added.
Now the hostels do not have a boundary wall, threatening their safety and security, several inmates of the hostel said. Animals, especially cows, entered from the back of the hostels, which house over 200 students.
