BMC to make briquettes out of green waste

Bhubaneswar: Green garbage like uprooted trees, branches and leaves generated from the city will not be allowed to become part of the solid municipal waste as Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to make briquettes out of the bulk of such waste. Currently, BMC collects green garbage in trucks and takes them to a dumping yard. Once they decompose, BMC uses the Windrows method to process the waste, along with other solid municipal waste. But this practice will be stopped with the civic body trying to monetise the waste by setting up a briquette-making factory.
“It will be a 10 tonne per day capacity unit where the green waste, including small and big trunks of trees, will be reduced to tiny pieces (like straws). The bulk of tiny pieces will then be processed through compaction and extrusion to make briquettes,” Manaranjan Sahu, BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation), said.
Briquette pieces are as good as coal that can be used for various purposes, including outdoor cooking and heating. The civic body has floated a tender to engage a private party to take up the work.
On a daily basis, the city generates about 10 tonne of such waste, BMC officials said. “During leaf shedding season, monsoon and during pruning activities, green waste is generated from public spaces as well as from residential areas. The collected green waste will be taken to the briquette unit now and not the dump yard ,” said Sahu.
