Bravery Award: Mother and Son Receive State Government Bravery Award for Saving Man from Drowning | Bhubaneswar News
Kendrapada: On March 2, Jayanti Mallick (42) and her son Rudra Prasad (13) had gone to the Brahmani river like every other day to take a bath. Being residents of the riverside village of Nimpur in the district, the Brahmani was their lifeline. That day, it threw up a surprise.
While the mother and son were bathing, they heard cries for help coming from somewhere down the river. They saw three men getting swept away in the river. Ignoring the strong current, the two swam towards the men. But while they managed to save one, the other two drowned.
On Thursday in Bhubaneswar, the mother and son were awarded by CM Mohan Majhi with the Biju Patnaik Bravery Award-2023 on the occasion of National Sports Day. They were presented with Rs 1 lakh each and silver plaques.
Thanks to their effort, Badal Kumar (26) of Uttar Pradesh could return home. Talking to TOI, both mother and son said they are delighted to receive the govt award. “But our only regret is that we could not save the lives of the other two,” said Jayanti.
Recalling the incident, she said, “There was nobody around when the incident took place. We did not know what to do when we heard the cries for help. We just swam towards them in a bid to save their lives. We managed to save the life of Badal.”
The other two, Ajit Kumar (20) and Javed Khan (20), were also from Uttar Pradesh. All the three were working with a hoarding firm.
They came to Pattamundai to paint hoardings and had entered the river to take a bath when they got swept away. “The exemplary courage of mother and son and their presence of mind saved the life of a person from the jaws of death,” said Jaganath Acharya of Nimpur village.
