BMC to keep an eye on littering near food kiosks

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday wrote to the association of street vendors about the dos and don’ts of ensuring cleanliness around their stalls and kiosks.
BMC enforcement squad found blatant violation of sanitation norms it has formulated to ensure that vendors handle their waste carefully. The civic body has identified 15 food streets, where a variety of eateries carry out business in the evening.Vendors on those streets have been asked to stick to the norms, BMC officials said.
BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation) Manoranjan Sahu said apart from the established norms of maintaining self-cleanliness within a 5-metre radius of their shops, the vendors will have to follow some new norms. “We have decided to make it mandatory for all small and big eateries to obtain food licence from BMC. If found without a licence, a vendor can be penalised or the shop may be shut. Second, the vendors will have to avoid disposable plates and spoons. Third, they need to put up sufficient lights at the place where they serve food with proper seating arrangement,” he told TOI.
Vendors have also been asked to keep the used plates carefully and wash them properly. “They should keep clean drinking water at their kiosks. While serving food, they should wear hand gloves and sanitary caps. When inspection is conducted, they should cooperate with food safety teams,” Sahu added. BMC has also instructed the vendors they should handle the leftover food and other waste carefully to void litter. Two separate dustbins for wet and dry waste should be installed at the kiosks to make the job of waste collectors easy.
BMC squads have been carrying out evening inspection along the arteries where eateries are present to see if they are littering and if they are using banned single-use polythene bags. There are some eateries and vegetable vendors, who mostly carry out their business in the evening. A few grocery and other shops also do business in the evening.
“We have formed evening squads, which impose fine on finding vendors not using the twin dustbins and littering food plates,” a BMC officer said.
