BMC takes up 45 drainage projects to counter urban flooding | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: To improve the city’s drainage network and mitigate urban flooding during the rains, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken up 45 distinct drainage projects across the capital.
The comprehensive Rs 1.8 cr project encompasses almost all parts of the city. The works include construction of new drains, enhancement of existing ones, and barricading and covering of open drains and drainage channels, among others.
In ward no. 51, internal drain construction work commenced at Prakruti Vihar. In ward no. 11, barricading of open space adjacent to the drains and culverts in Dhirakuti Basti has been initiated as part of the project.
Similarly, in ward no. 41, grating and repair work of the open well near PHD Colony at Bapuji Nagar has commenced. In ward no. 11, barricading work of the vulnerable sections of different drains has been undertaken by the civic body.
“We have listed the project and finalised the tender. The work has already begun in different wards. Since it is a dry period, we anticipate completing the entire work in two months’ time,” said mayor Sulochana Das.
Das said the projects specifically aim to alleviate waterlogging in several localities. “Focus is on identifying, covering, and barricading the open drains in different areas for safety,” she said.
BMC, in their current endeavour, also prioritises barricading the main drains or the natural drainage channels, which are otherwise vulnerable to open dumping and encroachment.
Accordingly, the barricading work will be executed for main drain No. 1A in the Patia, drain no. 4 at Jaydev Vihar square, lane 1 and lane 3 in Jaydev Vihar , and also near Sani Temple near Acharya Vihar.
Also, barricading and sandbag packing will be implemented for main drain no. 1 in Gadakana and Sunrise Colony. Complete barricading work will also be undertaken for drain no. 5 near Mali Sahi and for drain no. 6 in ward no. 26.
“Bhubaneswar is expanding rapidly, and it is imperative that civic infrastructure be established in a futuristic manner. Several parts of the city are still experiencing waterlogging issues. Earlier, we witnessed incidents of people being washed away in open drains. These need to be addressed,” said social worker Alok Kar.
