BMC provides Rs 5L aid to Sahadeb’s family

Bhubaneswar: Officials of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh as compensation to a family member of Sahadeb Nayak, who was brutally murdered on the Rasulgarh road overbridge on Jan 8.
BMC has also resolved to provide the job of supervisor to Sahadeb’s wife. The decisions materialised following demands by the Safai Karmachari Sangha, which staged a demonstration seeking justice for Sahadeb and his family. Subsequently, the workers ended their protest.
Mayor Sulochana Das told TOI that all BMC staff was profoundly affected by the tragic death and bereavement for Sahadeb’s family, who served as a sanitation worker and was a leader of the sanitation workers.
“Since BMC lacks provisions for compensating such losses, a resolution was reached and funds were collected from private sanitation agencies associated with us. The amount was disbursed to the family members on Saturday,” she said.
Sources said the sanitation workers on dharna demanded Rs 30 lakh compensation for Sahadeb’s family. “We have communicated the demand to the govt. We have also written to the govt to regularise the employment of sanitation workers,” Das said.
Later in the day, Sahadev’s wife and two daughters met former chief minister Naveen Patnaik, demanding stringent punishment for the accused. Patnaik condoled the death and assured support to his family.
He promised to pursue justice for the family. For immediate relief, Patnaik provided Rs 50,000 to Sahadeb’s family to carry out his last rites. The brutal murder in broad daylight had left residents shocked and petrified.
