BMC looks to open flyover in Vikhroli by end of May

Mumbai: BMC on Friday said that the construction of the flyover near Vikhroli Railway Station — which connects the eastern and western suburbs — is now in its final stage.
“All steel girders for the bridge have been delivered to the project site. The bridge is being constructed in three phases. The first phase is complete, with six girders successfully installed. The remaining two phases, which will involve laying of 12 girders, are also progressing well. The BMC plans to open the bridge for traffic by the end of May 2025,” said the civic body in a statement.
The total width of the bridge being constructed near Vikhroli Station is 12 metres, and its total length is 615 metres. Of this, 565 metres is being constructed by the BMC, and the remaining 50 metres will be built by the Railways. Each girder being laid weighs around 25 metric tons and is between 25 to 30 metres in length. A total of 18 girders will be installed across the bridge’s three phases — six in each phase. The six girders for the first phase are already successfully installed. Work on the remaining two phases is well underway. Out of the total 19 pillars of the bridge, 12 are on the eastern side and 7 on the western side — all of which are constructed.
Currently, 85% of the bridge work is completed. The remaining 15% will be completed by the end of May 2025, after which the bridge will be opened for traffic. Once operational, the bridge will help decongest traffic and save both time and fuel for commuters traveling from the Eastern Express Highway toward Powai. The bridge will also benefit vehicle users within a 5-km radius of Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, and Kanjurmarg railway stations.
Work on the eastern side of the bridge is 95% complete.
