BMC identifies 15 more parking lots

Bhubaneswar: To streamline parking, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 15 more parking lots across the city in a bid to check haphazard parking along the roads and in front of malls and markets.
BMC officials said small parking spaces will be closed, and new and bigger lots in vacant areas will be turned into designated parking spaces. If govt land is not available, BMC officials will approach private individuals who have bigger plots so that they can be used for parking purposes on a rental basis.
“We have brought in a new standard operating procedure (SOP) for parking, which is in the draft stage and will be put before the corporation for approval. The new SOP has specified the area of parking, enhancing institutional lots, and the parking fee structure and enforcement. So far, we finalised 15 new parking lots,” said BMC deputy commissioner Ajay Mohanty.
There are 26 big markets in the city that have vegetable and grocery clusters, apart from a number of malls, hospitals, market complexes and corporate houses. There is a paucity of space for institutional parking especially in front of malls and markets, as a result of which people are compelled to park on roads, leading to traffic chaos. BMC said institutional parking space will be increasing by earmarking vacant spaces nearby.
Besides the daily grind of visitors at Unit I and Unit II, (Unit-I vegetable market has been waiting for redesign for long), Indradhanu market, Unit IV, and other markets literally have no parking space except the narrow roads leading to shops. They take the load of vehicles.
The stretch of Smart Janpath from Vani Vihar to Sishu Bhawan was designed to create smart roadside parking. Interestingly, in between the stretch, a multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility at Saheed Nagar has come up. Now the city authorities don’t allow parking between Vani Vihar and Satya Nagar to direct people towards MLCP.
In another development, BMC has identified 30 places to rehabilitate evicted vendors who were removed from 56 major stretches. In several special drives, BMC officials evicted the vendors to do away with the cluttered look and to check traffic congestion. At those 30 places, kiosks will be built where around 5,000 vendors will be allotted stalls.
