BMC floats tender for stray dog sterilisation

Bhubaneswar: BMC has initiated steps to resume its Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme by floating a fresh tender for stray dog sterilisation on Monday.
The drive, which aims to control the city’s growing street dog population, has been suspended for over a year due to multiple challenges.
The suspension came after civic bodies across the state failed to comply with court orders in an animal rights case, followed by complications arising from the central govt’s modification of sterilisation guidelines, officials said.
“New private parties will be roped in through the tender and they will hire veterinary doctors to operate on stray dogs. We have two facilities. One at Mancheswar and another at Sahid Nagar. We want to make the Mancheswar kennel functional first,” said BMC additional commissioner Ratnakar Sahu.
Residents have been complaining of increased stray dog menace as sterilisation has been hampered. Dog population increased further this winter breeding season increase, said sources. BMC had readied 360 dog kennel for resumption of surgery of stray dogs.
