BMC deploys AI tools & robots for pre-monsoon drain cleaning | Mumbai News – Times of India

With monsoon clouds beginning to gather earlier than expected over the city, BMC has taken a hi-tech approach in its drain-cleaning drive by using AI tools and robots to reach hard-to-reach culverts under railway tracks.According to BMC officials, over 85% of the work on major drains and 65% on minor drains was already completed.Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, during his inspection of nullahs in Bhandup, Wadala, and Dharavi on Friday, issued a stern ultimatum to BMC: “Clean every drain by June 7 or face action. Any official found delaying the desilting work will be held accountable. And the silt removed must be transported to dumping grounds within 48 hours.” When civic officials said that over 85% of the work on major drains and 65% on minor drains was already completed, Shinde added: “There’s still time; with 15 days in hand, we’re confident we’ll beat the deadline.” Shinde also visited Vikhroli’s Surya Nagar, a landslide-prone zone, where he directed BMC to install protective nets and begin relocating families living in high-risk areas. He wrapped up his inspection with a visit to Kasarwadi in Dadar, home to many of the sanitation workers. — Richa Pinto
