BMC appeals to citizens to not throw garbage in drains | Mumbai News – Times of India
MUMBAI: The BMC administration has appealed to citizens to not throw garbage in drains, which have been desilted. According to the civic body, many large drains in Mumbai are prone to flooding due to floating garbage thrown by citizens and the garbage too is the biggest obstacle in the process of removing silt from nullahs. Even after regular cleaning of nullahs, dumping of garbage does not stop in many areas.
According to a BMC release, various measures are being taken by the civic administration to ensure that the citizens of Mumbai do not face any inconvenience during the rainy season. As part of the pre-monsoon works, the rivers and drains of the Mumbai metropolitan area are being desilted. According to BMC, work on removal of silt from big and small drains has reached the final stage. However, despite the completion of desilting in some nullahs, they have to be cleaned frequently due to accumulation of floating waste due to the tide.
The corporation has appealed to citizens to not throw plastic bags, bottles, thermocol and other similar waste in nullahs, so that drains are not blocked by garbage and water drains quickly.
