BERHAMPUR: A BJP supporter was killed and seven others were injured in a clash between BJD and BJP supporters at Sri Krushna Saranapur, under Ganjam district’s Khallikote police station limits on Wednesday night. The incident is being considered pre-poll violence.
The deceased, identified as Dillip Kumar Pahana (28) from the same village, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, according to police reports.Preliminary inquiries suggest that the clash erupted over disputes regarding the sticking of posters of a candidate. During the altercation, supporters from both parties resorted to using sharp weapons, resulting in injuries. The injured individuals were promptly rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for medical attention.
In response to the incident, several BJP supporters expressed their anger by vandalizing vehicles parked near the house of the BJD candidate at Khallikote and staging a road blockade near the police station. They demanded the immediate arrest of Khallikote MLA Suryamani Baidya, who is seeking re-election in the seat, and her husband, Daitary Behera.
Baidya is contesting on the BJD ticket for a second term in Khallikote, which falls under the Aska Lok Sabha seat. The BJP has fielded Purna Chandra Sethi, a former MLA, as their candidate against Baidya. The simultaneous election for this segment, which is reserved for the scheduled caste, is scheduled to be held on May 20.
