BJP: State hopes for more berths in Cabinet | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: With the BJP winning 20 out of 21 Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, the list of Union minister aspirants from the state is swelling. Baijayant Panda, Aparajita Sarangi, Sangeeta Singh Deo, Ananta Nayak, Sambit Patra and Jual Oram are among the top contenders for berths in PM Narendra Modi’s council of ministers, with Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan most probably being shifted to Bhubaneswar to lead the state govt.
Many BJP members in Odisha are optimistic that Modi will reward the impressive electoral performance in the state by including at least two Lok Sabha MPs from Odisha in the Union Cabinet. Additionally, they anticipate that three other MPs will be offered positions as ministers of state. In Modi’s second term, Dharmendra and Ashwini Vaishnaw, both Rajya Sabha members, were in the Cabinet while Lok Sabha members Pratap Sarangi (2019-2021) and Bishweswar Tudu (2021-2024) were ministers of state at different times.
The higher expectations of the state BJP brass are based on the “stupendous performance” in the recent elections. With PM-elect Modi acknowledging the party’s performance in Odisha as revolutionary and asserting the state will be a key growth engine of a developed India, local BJP members believe the strong performance will bring recognition and representation in the central govt.
Baijayant, a pilot-turned-politician, secured victory from Kendrapada and may emerge as a potential minister, given his extensive political career. Baijayant, who is BJP national vice-president, has demonstrated his capabilities as prabhari (in-charge) of Assam and Delhi BJP units. With five terms as MP — including two in the Rajya Sabha (2000 and 2006) and three in Lok Sabha (2009, 2014, and 2024) — Baijayant has been a key member of the BJP national core group, articulating and communicating the rationale behind the amendment of Article 370 of the Constitution concerning Jammu & Kashmir.
Aparajita, a former IAS officer-turned-parliamentarian, who secured the Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat for the second successive time, brings with her a wealth of administrative experience. She is believed to have a good rapport with the PMO, which may work in her favour.
Ananta, a two-time MP from Keonjhar, may emerge as a prominent tribal face. Another prominent tribal face Jual, a six-time MP from Sundargarh and former minister, may also make a comeback.
